Re-Imagining Rooftops
Reusing Rooftops in Barcelona: Architecture Competition 2024
in Partnership with
In my participation in the "Reusing Rooftops Barcelona 2024" architecture competition, I explored innovative strategies to transform the rooftops and interior courtyards of a Barcelona city block. My design focused on sustainability, innovation, and collective well-being, aiming to create attractive communal spaces while promoting sustainable architecture. Utilizing ecological materials and renewable energy sources, I envisioned urban green spaces that not only adapt to climate change but also improve air quality and reduce the urban heat island effect. Additionally, my proposal emphasized enhancing urban biodiversity through the reintroduction of native flora and the creation of habitats for local fauna. The solutions developed in this project are adaptable to other cities facing similar urban challenges.

Focus
The focal point for this structure is an oversized spiral staircase, lined with a brass twisted railing, centered in the heart of the terrace. Open to the public, the ground terrace has four access points and is decorated with carefully placed trees as well as greenery that surround the main entrance to both the stairs and elevator . In order to achieve a successful circulation of the structure, the stairs wrap around a cylindrical elevator that allows wheelchair users to enjoy the rooftop as well. Arriving at the top, two paths allow access to the top level, where stairs lined with ramps level the irregular surfaces creating a circular flow. The two hanging paths are rimmed with solar panels that are set on top of the high glass railing which borders the rooftop for safety. Each corner of the rooftop area is rounded by high gardens and benches to provide sitting. The gardens are landscaped with trees and more greenery to provide ambiance to the space as well as serving their purpose as carbon absorbers. Further examples of greenery are also found as four semicircle lawns are located across the path. Such areas have numerous possibilities of use, as they provide a space to: practice yoga, exercise, create a picnic, socialize, and much more. Overall the design aims to create a circular flow throughout the modern structure that enables people to use an area that was once before without purpose. Therefore the focal point of the structure is the intricately detailed staircase, as it’s what ties everything together by allowing access from one space to another.
